Pastor: Job Description

Function


To lead a balanced intergenerational ministry of worship, preaching, and teaching; to provide pastoral
care and help the congregation care for each other; and to do the required administrative work. This work is done together with the Congregation, Church Board, Ministry Team for Youth and Children (MTYC), Preaching Team, Caring Team, and standing committees.

Responsibilities

Pastors will collaboratively determine their focus on the following items according to congregational
needs, and the pastors’ strengths and capacity.
● To lead the congregation in articulating and living out its vision, values and identity.
● To lead a biblically-based preaching ministry that will attract people to Christ and to the church as
understood in the Anabaptist-Mennonite tradition.
● To work with the Worship Committee and the Preaching Team in planning and leading creative
corporate worship.
● To lead the pastoral care of the congregation. This includes planning with the Caring Team and
Congregational Life Committee a program of visitation, pastoral care and overseeing of the
congregation’s care for each other and newcomers.
● To minister to the youth and children of the congregation, through faith formation, pastoral care,
and leadership development in collaboration with the MTYC.
● To minister to the seniors of the congregation.
● To provide, with the Caring Team, pastoral service for persons in crisis, both from the
congregation and visitors.
● To support the Mission and Service Committee, and others in mission, as the congregation lives
out its call to be the church of Christ in the world.
● To serve ex officio on the Board of Aurora House.
● To be an active teacher of Scripture, theology and church history for the benefit of all in the
congregation, to equip the congregation to pass on its faith to children and seekers of all ages, and
to prepare baptismal candidates and those wishing to transfer membership to TUMC.
● To plan and conduct services marking significant life events such as parent/child dedications,
baptisms, marriages, separations and funerals.
● To work with the Church Board in the administration and leadership of the church.

● Administration: One pastor will act as Team Lead for the Ministry Team. This person’s duties will include supervision of the church administrator and the MTYC, including annual reviews, and advising the TUMC Finance Team of hourly staff vacation times for pay adjustment.
● To maintain good relationships with the other partners in our building.
● To encourage the congregation to participate in the life of the wider Mennonite Church and the
broader community.
● To participate in local ministerial groups and the wider church as a representative of the
congregation and as part of the congregation’s own ministry.

Accountability

The Pastors are accountable to the Congregation. Normally, this will be through the Church Board and the Pastor Congregation Relations Committee.

Supply Pastor: Job Description

Function


To support Toronto United Mennonite Church in a pastoral role while it searches for a new, long-term
pastor. Working in a team environment, the supply pastor will be involved in an intergenerational ministry of worship, preaching, and teaching and pastoral care. The ministry is carried out alongside an already established pastor who serves 0.5 FTE.

Responsibilities

● To be part of a biblically-based preaching ministry that will attract people to Christ and to the churc
as understood in the Anabaptist-Mennonite tradition.
● To work with the other pastor, the Worship Committee and the Preaching Team in the planning and
leading creative corporate worship.
● To work with the Associate Pastor and the Caring Team in offering pastoral care of the congregation.
● To minister to the seniors of the congregation.
● To provide, with the Associate Pastor and Caring Team, pastoral service for persons in
crisis, both from the congregation and visitors.
● To be an active teacher of Scripture, theology and church history for the benefit of all in the
congregation, to equip the congregation to pass on its faith to children and seekers of all ages, and

Term length

Flexible. Preferred term is January to June 2025.

Time complement

Flexible, based on the interest of the candidate. Minimum .5 FTE (20 hours per week). Full-time possible.

TUMC follows the Mennonite Church Canada pastor salary guidelines
